Wildlife Course for Veterinary Professionals

October 13, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 4:30 pm

£125

This wildlife course is designed for veterinary surgeons, registered veterinary nurses, veterinary students and student veterinary nurses and looks at the ethical problems relating to wildlife casualties and the possible consequences of their release. Others who work in a veterinary environment (receptionists, animal care assistants etc.) will also find the course of interest.

The course, led by Dr Liz Mullineaux MRCVS (Scientific Advisor and veterinary surgeon SWWR), includes Triage which is the process by which we decide which animals we can successfully treat and release and which we need to euthanase. Triage decisions are often, but not exclusively, medical. The full spectrum of factors affecting our triage decisions will be discussed.

The principles of first aid in wildlife species are not greatly dissimilar to those in domestic animals, however, delivery of adequate first aid can be difficult. We will discuss a range of first aid techniques applicable to wildlife, including appropriate fluid therapy, analgesia, bandaging and wound care.

The range of medical problems affecting UK mammals and birds is broad and in the afternoon sessions, we will cover as many of the common problems seen in many common species in the time available.

Finally we will make use of our available wildlife cadavars to have hands on experience of examining these animals and practicing first aid and other techniques.

This is a full day course, so please bring your own packed lunch; there are facilities for heating food. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided throughout the day.

There will also be a special offer on BSAVA Manual of Wildlife Casualties for those registering for this course. A discount code will be provided to claim a £10 discount off the print or digital versions.

The course ticket prices are as follows:
