Freda the Fallow Fawn
Freda the fallow fawn was rescued by some children who were out walking in the Forest of Dean. She was hanging upside down with her back leg caught in a wire fence where she had tried to jump the fence and had become entangled. She must have been there for at least 3 days as she was dehydrated and covered in fly’s eggs. Luckily the children’s father was a vet and he was able to rescue the fawn and clean her up. He stitched the wound and gave her some fluids and was amazed when she was still alive the following day.

Freda was then brought to us to care for. She was only about three weeks old when she arrived on Saturday August 12th. To start with her back leg was twice the size of the other due to the severe bruising and infection. Given a course of anti-biotics and having had regular cleaning and dressing of the wound, Freda is slowly recovering from her ordeal.

She is living in the cubby hole in Pauline’s kitchen but she is taking daily walks out in the garden. There is concern as to how much damage has been done to the nerves and ligaments in the leg so she has a long way to go before we can be sure that the full use of her leg will return.

Meanwhile, Freda is enjoying being bottle fed and fussed over. She is definitely everyone’s favourite casualty at the moment!
