Thursday 2nd July

The fawns are settled in the shed. By feeding them over the door Rob and Derek are still taking from the syringe. Martin and Stuart ( as the fallow has been named ) are lapping. I’m away for a few days so Lisa is going to look after them for me but I doubt that they will feed from her. I am leaving them shut in for today to get used to the shed for shelter.

Lisa has been busy today getting up to date with the blood testing. I shall be glad when we have done all three tests on all of the cubs. It is horrible waiting for results and knowing that if they are positive, that we will have to put them down although they look perfectly healthy. Sadly it is a protocol that we must follow to be responsible with Bovine tb being such a problem in the cattle at the moment.

I took some photos of the fawns when I did the evening feed. The fallow has such fabulous eyes!

Stuart has such gorgeous eyes!

Murder in Wales

Badgers like this will be murdered thanks to the decision of the Welsh Assembly

Badgers like this will be murdered thanks to the decision of the Welsh Assembly

The Welsh Assembly will be committing murder when they go ahead with their badger ‘cull’ in Wales. They are taking on board all the suggestions of the Independent Scientific Group research programme re cattle to cattle transmission and ignoring the proof that badger culling does not work. It shows that they are going to kill badgers just to sweeten the bitter pill for farmers who finally accept that they have much to do to resolve Bovine tb in cattle.

By using all the methods together there will be no proof to show what actions may cause any reduction in the disease that they are expecting to find. This pilot scheme has no scientific value and is heading for disaster. The actions of the Welsh Assembly are feeding the ‘kill badger frenzy’ that the NFU and other farming bodies have continued to fuel since the conclusion of the Random Badger Culling Trial in 2007.

There will be a huge resistance to this experiment and it does nothing to enhance the reputation of the farming fraternity. This experiment is abhorrent to many farmers who are absolutely against the culling of badgers. They believe in the science and will sadly have to sit back and watch this cruel experiment happen. The badger truly is the scapegoat for the Welsh Assembly who have agreed to go forward with the policy of killing badgers in order to have other preventative measures accepted. They obviously don’t have the stamina of Hilary Benn, who despite huge pressures, followed science rather than emotion.

It is the welsh taxpayer who will be paying for this cull. Millions of pounds will be spent on killing badgers that will do nothing for the farming produce and tourism in Wales. Thousands of people will show their feelings through how they spend their money and where they go on holiday. The Welsh Assembly will certainly then realise the true cost of their actions.
