Thursday 2nd July

The fawns are settled in the shed. By feeding them over the door Rob and Derek are still taking from the syringe. Martin and Stuart ( as the fallow has been named ) are lapping. I’m away for a few days so Lisa is going to look after them for me but I doubt that they will feed from her. I am leaving them shut in for today to get used to the shed for shelter.

Lisa has been busy today getting up to date with the blood testing. I shall be glad when we have done all three tests on all of the cubs. It is horrible waiting for results and knowing that if they are positive, that we will have to put them down although they look perfectly healthy. Sadly it is a protocol that we must follow to be responsible with Bovine tb being such a problem in the cattle at the moment.

I took some photos of the fawns when I did the evening feed. The fallow has such fabulous eyes!

Stuart has such gorgeous eyes!

Monday June 29th

The injured fox that came in last night seems to be suffering from concussion but it has eaten all it’s food so we are going to continue supporting it and see how it progresses.

The young deer, I’m almost sure is blind and the leg injury is an old fracture. The sight problem would be the reason for it just sitting on a drive in a housing estate. It freaks out when you touch it so we have put food around it and will leave it quiet for today.

The other fox cub that came in from a vets on Saturday night, again is eating his food but obviously has some neurological symptoms. A lot of the pigeons, crows and magpies were picked up over the weekend to be released by the people who brought them in so our aviaries have emptied a little

Helen, our work experience student, is on her third week and is feeling more at home. She certainly is a great help and today was busy in the hospital room – mainly pellet feeding pigeons and many other baby birds! Students are so much help at this time of year.

Luckily we are going to be able to use an enclosure that one of our supporters has in his garden for a group of fox cubs as all our grassed enclosures are full. Most of the fox and badger cubs are being fed at night now so it lots of bowls of food that all has to be made up for the evening shift.

Managed to do a bit of weeding in the evening while Derek, the roe fawn charged around the front garden. There was quite a few visitors to so it was past 10 by the time we sat and ate our dinner. Still very hot even in the night.

TuesdayJune 16th

Continued to watch the red calf on the camera jumping the walls and went down a couple of times yesterday evening to make the shed darker but she still was getting up and jumping at the walls. I was so worried that she’d split the stitches.

Got a phone call at 11 p.m. to say that a badger was coming in from Weston Super Mare. We were so pleased to hear that we had at last caught the badger in the trap that has been set now for about three weeks. The garden had a badger visiting which appeared to have something tight around her neck and the worry was that she would get trapped somewhere.

I went down to get a pen ready, only to realise that there was no free pens in either the Millie block or the Courtyard pens. The answer was to evict 3 jackdaws from a pen and place them in a carrier for the night. I cleaned the pen out and got a meal ready for the badger. Pauline’s Blog – sorry for the delay! (15/05/09)

A successful release!

A successful release!

April 30th

Back into routine with the badger cubs in the kitchen and still feeding Hope the otter cub, who is in a pen with an inside and outside enclosure. She has water available to her all the time in the pen outside but is still making the most of some towels left on the floor for her to dry herself.

She will only come out once I have put the food on the floor and I certainly would not want to try and pick her up!

We had a report of three badger cubs sitting on the side of the road and the finder very kindly brought them in. They were quite small cubs and very hungry. All three were boys and had to be front lined to get rid of the unwanted guests. Once they were clean and warm they were added to the cubby hole. Georgie, Porgie and Jack were duly named. Let’s hope the next cub in is a gril and we can call her Jill!

It always amazes me just how quickly they all mix and follow the routine in the kitchen. With 4 still on bottle and 3 solid food meals a day, it takes up quite a bit of time. 10 cubs in the kitchen is a record and the cubby hole looks like a fitted carpet of badgers ! Billy & Lilly after their bottle feed

Billy & Lilly after their bottle feed

April 25th and 26th

The weekend was a busy one with over 20 people here on Saturday from the People’s Trust For Endangered Species I gave them a talk and then a tour around the facilities and they all seemed to enjoy the visit There were several who had already been before and were surprised to see how we had progressed in such a short space of time.

I managed over the weekend to get the final signatories of the campaign against the culling of badgers off to the Welsh Assembly. The final total was 14,098 signatures so it should show them that there are a lot of people against the cull. If you would like more information, visit our www.blackandwhite.info site as sadly I think we shall have to remain active to bring this to everyone’s attention.

I left the badger cubs in the safe hands of Lisa and went to the Badger Trust AGM in Stafford. Sadly it was soon evident that the Welsh Assembly is hell bent on killing badgers. They are passing new legislation to allow cage trapping and shooting or lethal injection and also shooting of free running badgers. This is all in the face of robust science.
