The badger cub and her fleas!

The badger cub and her fleas!

Wednesday June 24th

Managed to finish a bit more of the front garden . I’ve nearly finished and then I can move to the garden around the side of the house. Dave, one of our volunteers rang while I was out there to say he was bringing in a badger cub and injured squirrel but would not be here till after 11 30.

I went on with feeding the fawns in the kitchen while I waited and Marie also kindly stayed on although she was meant to finish at 10. Dave and his wife, Rosemary got here just after 11.30. Marie saw to the squirrel which was not able to move its back legs but could move its tail. We decided to give it pain relief and give it the benefit of the doubt. Its back was not broken if it could move its tail but it looked like a broken pelvis. A quiet night was all we could do at this stage. He was still lively as he had managed to bite Dave and Marie was careful when she injected it.

The badger cub had obviously lost mum. It was very under weight and found in someone’s chicken house. She had come complete with fleas so we sprayed her and left her for a while as the fleas jumped ship ! Once she was clear, we moved her down with Polly and Little Miss Muffet. We put an extra portion of food in the pen and she was soon snuggled up with the others. Continue reading Pauline’s Blog! 24th June 09

The swan was not very easy to get to!

The swan was not very easy to get to!

Tuesday June 23rd

Late last night I was feeding the fawns in the kitchen and the alarm bell went again. It was nearly mid-night so out I went only to find the same lady back with another water vole. She’d only just got home when the cat walked across the drive with another one in its mouth so she turned around and came back out again! I put it with the other and hoped there would not be a third!

Clinton Rogers was here this morning to film some of the animals having picked up my press release on the cruelty that we have come across in the past few weeks. Hopefully a piece on tv may get the message across.

Luckily we had a boat handy!

Luckily we had a boat handy!

Graeme and Vicky were busy yesterday with releases. The first was a swan that was beaten up by another swan in Bridgwater Bay. Simon and Graeme went out in our boat to catch it. The swan was trapped by some railings. Luckily it only had superficial wounds and hurt pride! It had been in with us for a few days and was ready for release.

We would normally take the swan to a different location if there had been a confrontation but Graeme had seen a single swan nearby when the family of swans were attacking so went to have a look before collecting the swan from our Centre. Sure enough a single swan was there with no sign of the aggressive male and his family.

So the swan was taken that afternoon back to Bridgwater Bay. Continue reading Pauline’s Blog!

The Shrews should prove very popular at the Open Weekend

The Shrews should prove very popular at the Open Weekend

Friday June 19th

Newsletter completed and sent to the printers. The new fawn, Martin, did not like me this morning and refused his feed so I left him until the afternoon. I marched Albert off to the kennels for a clip ready for the hot weather.

I had to catch up with a couple of people about finances and our camera system this morning so it was lunchtime before I knew it. As promised I picked Albert up just after 2 p.m and doesn’t he look a posh dog!

Lisa was pleased with Chaela’s wound and Freckles has got used to being with her. They have started to nuzzle so I think they will be fine. They are both drinking well. Lisa has put a bandage on the wound and fixed it around the body. If it stays ok. It will save having to bother her every day. Continue reading Pauline’s Blog!
